Don't Blame Your Online Smash Bros. Loss On Lag

For the most part I am not one to get easily annoyed, but there is one thing that really drives me up a wall, and that is when players blame the lag for a loss. I see it done by every type of player all over the internet. The most common reason people say they lost isn't because they were playing a superior opponent, or because they just played poorly, or anything like that; it is because there was too much lag. We all know that lag affects us, but don't go implying that you are really better than your opponent and they only beat you because of lag.

There are several reasons this bothers me. To begin with, if the lag is too much, and you are going to use it as an excuse afterwards if you lose, then don't even play the match. Once you begin you can almost always tell how laggy the match is going to be, and if you don't like it, then just exit out and find another match. Ok, so sometimes you can't do this if it is a tournament match or something of that sort, but during simple friendly matches you can. I would rather someone quit before a match really gets started than afterwards they same I'm not really better than them and it was just the lag.

Another thing is that both players have to deal with the lag. It isn't like lag is only 1 sided. When it comes down to it, lag is almost always there, and both players are forced to deal with it, which in the end makes compensating for lag a valuable skill online. Is this how it should be? Absolutely not. But the reality is that there will always be some minor lag, and often times there will even be some major lag, so in order to be good online you must learn to work with it. Does this make the online game different than the offline game? Of course. I realize that just because I'm slightly better than someone online doesn't always mean I'm better than them offline, and vice versa. If you are better at compensating for lag than your opponent than you will have an advantage when playing online. It is just the nature of the beast. If you don't like it, you are better served just to stay offline.

So, after all of that, blaming lag on a loss in my mind is simply saying that you don't have the skills needed to be good online. It is like blaming a loss on the inability to do a meteor attack. Again, I know it really shouldn't be that way, but because of Nintendo's service that is the way it is. So at least instead of blaming the lag and attempting to imply that your opponent wasn't really better than you, go flame Nintendo for not putting out a quality online service. At least that is something we all agree on.
