Losing

Recently I have quite frequently heard that when one's team loses in the playoffs or in the championship game in is more worse than finishing dead last during the season. There is an article on ESPN where they rank the teams on how much pain their fans suffer from, and they say that losing in the playoffs is more painful than being a last place team. I say that is a bunch of bull crap. It might hurt more after the loss and for a few weeks after, but it doesn't compare to suffering all freaking season long.

I am a Chicago Bears fan and an Illinois Fighting Illini fan. It hurt when Illinois lost in the championship game in 2005. It hurt in 2007 when the Bears lost in the Super Bowl. It hurts so bad when your team loses a title game, but after a few weeks you realize that yes, it would have been special to win the championship, but it was still a great season. Those were still great years to be a Bears and Illini fan. Yes, it hurt extremely bad after the loss, but I was loving everything about the season the 20 weeks before that.

On the other hand, I am a Chicago Cubs fan, and I understand what it is like to go a long time without winning. Yes, there was no moment that hurt as much as when the Bears lost the Super Bowl, but there haven't been much of the 20 good weeks either. 2 years ago it constant pain all year long (ok, they did start of the year well until Lee went down, but after that it was all pain). It hurt so much more over the course of a whole season. People say they would rather finish last that second, because it's so painful being that close, and that is completely false. There is nothing that compares to sucking all season long. It is much more painful. I am Cub fans, and 2 years ago I was never afraid to say that , I was never really ashamed to be a Cubs fan, but I will be honest, I quit watching their games at the end of the year. It's not because I'm not a good and true fan and didn't want to stay with them through the rough times. It's because I'm a great fan and it pained me too much to watch. I couldn't take it. I love the team and couldn't stand to watch them lose over and over again. Nothing compares to the pain of watching your beloved team lose more than they win. And it is probably worse in baseball, because they play virtually every day.

So when you hear people say that they would rather finish last than make it all the way to the finals and lose, that just isn't true. Maybe for one moment, but overall finishing last just sucks unlike anything else.
