Playing Super Smash Bros. With Items
One of the hotter brawl arguments always seems to be should items be turned on or off. Now I understand why some people feel that items should always be off to minimize luck, and there is nothing wrong with thinking that way, but I have disagree. I feel as if this is not the case, and that items are one of the many great things about Brawl and to turn them off is to take away from what the game really is. The majority of Brawl players, especially almost every "tournament player," feels that playing with items takes away from the skill needed to excel at brawl. I, however, see things the complete opposite. I feel that playing with items on takes even more skill than playing without them. One argument that many anit-items players make is that it is completely random who gets an item. While this is somewhat true, it isn't exactly pure 50/50. If you are in control of a match when an items falls, you are much more likely to have the advantage in getting to that item. By in control of a match, I mean that you are the one who is currently on the attack, and are dictating what the player does. Or even better yet, you have launched your opponent and they are having to spend time recovering. Does this mean that you will always have the advantage? No. But you will drastically increase your chances of getting an item if you are in control of the match. Learning to control a match is in fact a skill, and it become even more important with items turned on. Ok, so even if you are doing a good job at controlling a match, your opponent is still going to get some items. Some will argue that luck will sometimes play a huge factor by allowing their inferior opponents to get better items, even if they are getting fewer. Well, if you are truly a good player, and better than your opponent, you should still be able to compensate for these items. I believe that most items, including final smashes gained from the smash ball, can be dodged (no, not all, I realize that). Often times you can even use these items again your opponent. This dodging of items and learning to counter items is a skill which can be very difficult to master (I know I'm not very good at it, but I have faced some who are). These skills are lost in matches without items. I'll give an example. Many people get extremely pissed when there opponent "gets lucky" and gets a hammer, and don't bother to even try to counter it. However, good players can oftentimes make an opponent with a hammer an advantage for themselves. A player with a hammer can still be hit, and it isn't all that difficult. And the great thing is, because a player with a hammer doesn't have a midair jump or up special, and can't grab onto ledges, you only have to barely launch them off the platform and they are completely unable to recover. Again, it isn't the easiest thing to do, but many times those who claim there shouldn't be items are the ones that feel they are extremely good (what does that say about me, you decide for yourself, lol). I also feel that using items so that they are the most difficult to avoid is also a skill in itself. Although often times this isn't a physical skill, but a mental skill. This is part of the strategy aspect of Brawl. My taking into account your stage, the situation, and your opponent you must learn to maximize the effectiveness of your items. Is it really worth trying to swing the home run bat if you are facing a fast character who already has a high damage percent? Not really. Just throw it at them instead. Should you use Pit's final smash in a FFA timed match when all your opponents have a low damage percent? Not unless you feel you can't hang onto it until you can KO someone with it. These both seem relatively simple, but there are at times some very strategic moves that can only be used by those who are good at thinking on the fly and have learned to make effective decisions. Using your items efficiently can decrease the chance they will be avoided, and can ultimately win you a match. Of course, others may say you just got lucky with your timing or placement. You will know differently though. There is one last thing I would like to say about items. I feel that the ability to use items, especially smash attacks, is something that was meant to help balance the characters. It is my opinion that one of Sonic's advantages is supposed to be his ability to get to items quickly and his uber final smash. Turning items off just takes away one of his advantages. Another example is Pit. An advantage of his that I believe was intentional was his ability to much easier avoid many items and final smashes through his ability to fly. Not using items negates this advantage he has over other characters. So in conclusion, I am not one who believe that items should be turned off because they can negate the skill in Brawl. In fact, I believe they add even more skill to the game. This may actually be why players who don't play with items often feel like they are always screwed by them when they do. It is because in reality their opponents are better at using and avoiding items than they are because they are used to playing with them. In my opinion, you can have the best Super Smash Bros. skills in the world without items, but if you can't play with items, then you aren't really that good.
